Active Ownership

Taking responsibility as an investor also means being an active owner, not just as a shareholder but as a financier more broadly. We have built a robust active ownership program that includes exercising shareholder voting rights focused on the best interest of our clients and engaging with issuers to help mitigate ESG risk, to better understand the opportunities that companies face and encourage more sustainable practices. These figures represent all engagements performed by Aegon AM across our corporate fixed income and listed equity portfolios, primarily those advised and/or sub-advised by Aegon AM NL and Aegon AM UK.

As of December 31, 2023. Active Ownership is not applicable to all asset classes or affiliates. Percentages may not sum to 100 due to rounding. Themes are divided according to the main issue. At times, there is more than one theme for an engagement. Engagement will occur with some, but not all, issuers where the manager deems it appropriate. More information is available upon request. Not all engagements result in positive outcomes. Corporate issuers may change their business practices for any number of reasons that may or may not relate to engagement.

Our goals for active ownership

Our engagement efforts are focused on addressing and managing financially material ESG-related investment risks. To this end, we do the following:

  • We exercise our active ownership responsibilities on behalf of our clients

  • We strive to better understand the companies in which we invest

  • We monitor, manage and work to mitigate investment risks

  • We strive to meet clients' expectations regarding their policies and standards
